Hapag-Lloyd Lists $800-per-TEU Southwest Africa Surcharge

Hapag-Lloyd’s October 13 notice sets a USD 800-per-TEU PSS from October 25. Check the named lane, effective-date trigger and booking-specific quote.

Hapag-Lloyd’s October 13 advisory lists an updated Peak Season Surcharge of USD 800 per TEU for specified Southwest Africa shipments, applying to cargo on or after October 25, 2026 and remaining valid until further notice. The carrier says it applies to all container types. This report was prepared on October 14; the charge’s stated effective date is still ahead.

Check the named lane before revising a quote

The readable advisory body names China, Korea and Japan as origins. It lists destinations in Angola, Congo Brazzaville, DR Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Namibia and Equatorial Guinea, including Luanda, Pointe-Noire, Matadi, Douala and Walvis Bay. Its heading and region tags refer more broadly to Asia and Oceania, but the body available to us does not resolve the complete origin list. Customers using another origin should confirm coverage directly with the carrier.

The announced figure is a surcharge per TEU, not an all-in freight quotation or a rate per shipment. The notice supplies no previous rate in the readable text, so it does not establish the size of a price increase against an earlier booking. It also does not identify a change in sailing time, congestion or container availability.

Separate the rate unit from the shipment budget

For an equipment importer or spare-parts buyer, the useful next step is to obtain a written explanation of how the announcement affects the actual quotation. Keep the carrier surcharge, other transport charges and the complete shipment price as separate entries. A single headline number cannot show which items are already included in a supplier’s offer.

  • Confirm that the origin, destination port and container type fall within the carrier’s current notice.
  • Ask which shipment event determines the effective date for the booking, particularly if loading is close to October 25.
  • Confirm the TEU basis used in the quoted surcharge and the treatment of the actual equipment type.
  • Ask whether the offer already includes this PSS and how a later amendment would be handled.
  • Keep the quoted amount, validity date and party responsible for payment together in the procurement record.

These are questions for the carrier, forwarder and contracting parties. They do not determine an individual contract’s charges or replace a booking-specific quotation. Machinery that travels outside the named container service requires its own enquiry; the announcement should not be applied to every equipment movement.
